The "New-ish" Girl

Happy Tuesday beautiful people! It’s me, the new girl --- or rather the “new-ish girl”. I have been a part of the team here at AGID since May, but this is my first blog appearance. What up world? I hope I am interesting…or at the very least entertaining enough to keep your attention while you blow off work for a bit and catch up on the latest here at Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design and Parish! Some of you may be wondering who the heck is this?? Well, let me fill you in. The name’s Martha Ann, and it’s a pleasure to grace the pages of your web browser. Do I look skinny in this font?? I’M KIDDING, sort of… but in all seriousness, here’s a little blip about me and what’s been going on in my world lately. As a Montgomery native, some of you may already know me – but for those who don’t, well, here it is in a nutshell. I was born and raised right here in the Capital City. After 14 years -- that’s right, kindergarten took me 2 tries -- I graduated from Trinity in 2005 and headed straight for the Loveliest Village on the Plains. I entered the Interior Design program at Auburn as a freshman and after 5 years, several all-nighters, and countless cocktails I actually graduated! Wahoo – Go me! Now what?? Well, I’ll tell you what I did. I moved my sheltered little southern self all the way to Telluride, Colorado. Yep. I made like a cow patty and hit the trail. I headed West, friends, and I can honestly say it was the best thing I could have ever done for myself.

[some fun from one of the prettiest places on earth....I mean, really? yeah its that gorgeous!]

Telluride was a dream! I met my stud of a husband, Wes, just hours after arriving in town, got a job with a kick-A architecture firm, attended countless concerts and festivals, completed gorgeous hikes time and time again, and made some of the greatest memories of my life with the dearest friends a girl could have! The 5 years (plus 2 summers) I spent in Telluride shaped me into a new woman – it changed me – and for the better, I might add. If you have the chance to get out West I recommend you take it, and eat your heart out! You will not regret it. Why would you ever leave you ask? Well, sometimes the real world catches up with you and life throws you a curve ball, or two, or three. I may not have mentioned already, but I love my family more than life, and when crisis strikes there is nowhere I would rather be than surrounded by those I love more than words can say! I ventured home this past April for Easter weekend to see loved ones, celebrate an old friend who had a new baby on the way, and subsequently discover that my Mom had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. [que: record scratch] What the heck? Could this even be real? The answer is yes. It was very real and extremely scary. mae and mom1  me andmom

[that's my Mom, isn't she the prettiest?!]

So what do you do when you find out your Mom has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer?? You cry - A LOT, and then you cry a little more [picture Diane Keaton in “Something’s Gotta Give”]... sobbing

[yep...that was me...]

...but then you wipe away those tears, slap on a pair of your big girl panties and you move your not so sheltered anymore, but still very southern self back to Alabama. Yep. I felt just like Forest Gump – I ran home as fast as my fingers could book a flight – because let’s not kid ourselves….I don’t run anywhere. Within a week of being back in Colorado after Easter weekend I packed my bags, left my job, kissed my husband, hugged my dear friends, and headed back to good ole Fungomery! It felt so good to be home and back the comfort of my hometown surrounded by family and loved ones. It felt so great to be near my Mom. I knew I was right where I was needed and right where God wanted me to be. Now I needed only to trust that He would provide – because as I mentioned above I left my job…wait, what? Yeeeeeeah. My credit card bill is a very real thing…woops, sorry Honey! [Que: AGID] This is where Ashley Gilbreath saved my life. Luckily the girls at Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design and Parish were busier than ever and needed an extra hand – and guess who had one of those laying around…that’s right – ME! I actually have two of them, which makes typing blogs a lot easier! ;) studio pic

[here's the lot of us...not bad, eh?]

Yes, God showed himself and took care of me right when I needed it. He took me to a place of discomfort and dismay and He provided. He put me in an awesome office, working with some of the most supportive, beautiful, and fun girls I have ever encountered. He gave us a roof over our heads and he made it possible for Wes and our 2 dogs, Watson and Molly, to join me in the Gump this past July. THANK GOODNESS! Living without those guys was just about the worst thing ever. God tested us and it has only made us stronger – and for that we give thanks. my people 2

[my people]

These days you will find us piddling about Montgomery. I spend my week days working at AGID, caring for my Mom, and cooking dinner with the love of my life. We enjoy long walks in old Cloverdale and cheap boxed wine (or expensive wine if you’re buying). We spend our weekends chilling at the lake with the fam and here lately we’ve had some awesome Saturdays watching the greatest show on earth – College Football! WDE Folks!! We could not feel more blessed as each day passes and we witness God working in all of our lives. We could not be more grateful to be back in Montgomery as we venture into this new phase of our lives. Thank you for having us! It’s good to be home! Now, get your butt back to work…what do you think this is – Its Tuesday people!! XOXO, Martha Ann :)
