New Blog Series: Looking Between the Oaks; a View from my Clueless Perspective
Hey friends! I hope everyone is doing well. I have some exciting news to share with all of you! My husband and I just closed on a piece of property in Pike Road, Alabama and I am so ecstatic about it I can hardly stand it!

Some of you may or may not know this, but I am bit of a poser over here at Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design! I am not a designer AT ALL! I went to school for public relations. I know nothing about fabrics, textiles, finishes, architectural plans etc etc. I can barely even accessorize a coffee table.... My job around here is to make everyone else's life easier by running errands, placing orders, making calls and writing emails (among many other
duties). To say I am dense when it comes to this stuff is an understatement. We purchased this land with the intentions of building our "forever home" on it so we knew from the start we would need a LOT of help!
So, this blog series will be about our process...from start to finish....from my clueless
perspective! I am blessed to be surrounded by smart women who know exactly what they are doing because I surely don't. My guess is that many of you don't either and so we thought this could be a fun way for you to have a peek into the process as we tackle it week-by-week until it is completed!
So, why don't we start from the beginning...

It was April 2013 (literally a few weeks before our wedding) and my husband, Wright, approached me about some land he was interested in. A friend of ours purchased 150 acres and planned to develop it. It would be the ideal neighborhood with no more than ten homes throughout the whole property. Our parcel is slightly over eight acres and faces two ponds. The whole 150 acres is covered in rolling hills and Oak Trees.
A little background information: I grew up in McGhee Estates in Montgomery and have always loved the charm of that area of town along with Old Cloverdale. Old homes, gorgeous neighborhoods, kids always playing in the yards...you get the picture! My husband is an outdoorsmen. He spends most of his time in the woods and if he isn't in the woods he is fishing on the water. And if he isn't on the water he is golfing. And if it is raining and he can't be outside, he is in the garage or his man room working on his hunting bow or some other man toy. Don't even bring up football season because he manages to squeeze that into his spare time as well.
Ever since we started dating he had always said he wanted to end up on some land one day. Well, that day had come. The most beautiful piece of property had become available and all he had to do was convince his wife that it was time to consider a change. I'm not going to lie...I didn't make it very easy on him. When he finally got me out there to see the property I was sold. It truly is the most gorgeous piece of land I have ever seen.

So this process has been a long one, but after a year and a half we have finally closed and the land is ours! We celebrated by driving out there with our dogs and some champagne and sitting on the tailgate of his truck and toasting to our future. We talked about where we would put the house and where he wanted his barn and enjoyed watching the dogs run and play. It was such a surreal moment and I am so thankful I could share it with him.

So, the next step was to find an architect! More details on that to come...
